[taʊnz], Charles Hard, amerikanischer Physiker, * Greenville (S. C.) 28. 7. 1915; 1939-47 in den Bell Telephone Laboratories tätig, 1948-61 Professor an der Columbia University in New York, danach am Massachusetts Institute of Technology und ab 1967 an der University of California in Berkeley. Townes leistete bedeutende Beiträge zur Radartechnik, Mikrowellenspektroskopie und zur Physik der Maser und Laser. 1951 erkannte Townes die Möglichkeit der Verstärkung elektromagnetischer Wellen durch induzierte Emission geeigneter Moleküle, konstruierte 1954 mit seinen Mitarbeitern den ersten Maser und beschrieb 1958 mit A. L. Schawlow die Bedingungen für die Anwendung des Maserprinzips auf Licht. 1964 erhielt Townes zusammen mit N. G. Bassow und A. M. Prochorow den Nobelpreis für Physik.
